Convergence - Students to print out and put in their folders

The evaluation question that this post relates to is:
What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

Task: Extend your research on this topic and then create a web-tool on it

Convergence:
Technological convergence refers to the process where new technology is moving towards single platforms delivering multiple media outputs that can be used to reach audiences, for example, a PS3′s primary function is video gaming but you can download and watch movies from Lovefilm.com on it and also watch catch up TV and music videos.

Convergent technology is technology that allows an audience to consume more than one type of media from a single platform.
Lots of aspects of the internet e.g. social networking, YouTube, online editions of newspapers and magazines are convergent but candidates cannot quote the internet as the sole aspect of their answer. Their answer needs to be linked into the media area they are talking about (Film, Music, Magazines, Newspapers, Radio, Video Games). E.g if they were talking about newspapers you could link in to their online editions and talk about how this differs from the traditional paper version and the opportunities it presents or if talking about film, candidates could, for example, point to facebook campaigns advertising a film or viral marketing spread via the internet.
Digital projection is convergent technology because films that are produced digitally have moved away from the physical film medium and can be supplied to theatres in digital format (lower costs for distribution versus higher start up costs for theatres switching to digital technology). As the film is in digital format there are also cost savings as potentially less work needs to be done on the film to get it onto Blu-Ray, DVD, internet trailers etc as no physical conversion needs to take place because the film is already in digital format.
Cross Media Convergence is really a Business Studies term and refers to companies coming together vertically or horizontally (or both). The example often cited in exams is of Working Title making use of its parent company(s) to gain access to bigger stars and a better distribution network for their films.

Film Distribution - Students to print out and put in their folders

The evaluation question that this post relates to is:
What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

Task: Use the resources provided and conduct YOUR OWN research to write up about the marketing and distribution of films. Which company will you use to distribute your feature film (with the OTS you are creating) and why? Consider your target audience.

Indep vs Hollywood - Students to print out and put in their folders

The evaluation question that this post relates to is:
What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

Audiences and Institutions

Task: – Who will your audience be? Age, gender class/status. Mass or niche audience – why? What are their Psychographic? Add images of what your OTS audience will look like. What audience classification would they fit under, therefore what film rating will apply? Which media institution will distribute the film that you have made the OTS for and why? What other films has this company made? How are these films similar to yours?
Look at IMDb to gather audience research.

These are the evaluation questions relating to this subject:

How does your media product represent particular social groups?
Who would be the audience for your media product?

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

How Has the Research and Planning You Have Done Influenced Your OTS?

Task: Look at the posts you have done for your research and planning and analyse how they have helped influence your OTS. This is an essential post to complete.

1st - Rough Cut of Opening Sequence

Task: Embed 1st rough cut. Set up a screening over a lunch break to occur in the library. Speak to me about setting this up. Film the audience reactions and then the answers they give to the questions you ask (make sure these are prepared before the screening). Embed the video to this post and analyse the feedback given. What alterations do you plan to make as a consequence?

QUESTION: WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF HOLDING AUDIENCE FEEDBACK SESSIONS?
There are many reasons for gathering audience feedback on your finished sequence
1. It will help you understand the relationship between the text and the audience better
2. It will help you explore whether your film makes sense to the audience or not
3. It will help you understand whether your film actually appeals to your target audience and if so how
4. It will be useful to observe the audience reacting to your film
5. The responses will provide you with some useful research evidence
6. The responses will help you answer the 2 audience questions in the evaluation

sample questions:
1. What is the film’s title?
2. What genre do you think it is? What made you think this?
3. Is it supposed to be a mainstream blockbuster type of film, or a smaller independent production?
4. What type of cinema would you expect it to be shown in (big multiplex like ‘Vue’ or ‘Cineworld’, or an independent one off like ‘Screen on the Green’, or ‘The Phoenix’)?
5. Who do you think it’s suitable for/ targeted at (age, gender, tastes etc)?
6. Can you identify the characters you have seen (who they are, the role they play, the relationship between them)
7. Please describe what happens in the sequence
8. What do you think this film is actually about? (themes eg revenge, stalking, gang violence etc)

9. Do you think the opening sequence works (does it introduce the film successfully, the characters, the genre, the narrative)?
10. What, in your opinion, works particularly well in this sequence?
11. What, in your opinion, could be improved?
12. Would you want to watch the rest of the film, based on what you’ve seen so far?
13. Can you rate this opening sequence out of 10?

Differentiation
You could advertise the screening on our school radio and record it. Add the recording to your post via soundcloud. This will show how you are using media to your advantage.
